Learning Speed Reading

February 19th, 2010

What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can soon see who the wide readers are, since frequent readers often think and speak well too. They win the admiration, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale offered by television.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to depict the setting of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the different arguments and ideas theorized by the author of that self-help book you are studying.

Being able to read effectively helps you to develop an extensive vocabulary through reading different styles of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not know exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a general idea of what the sentence means.

The act of reading makes you more aware and more curious about hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they find a strange word, they try to work out what it means in the context. If they are stumped, they refer to the dictionary.

Likewise, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to different subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. As in other forms of education, you learn by actually doing and as you are reading you automatically learn about the subject matter of the book too!

Reading teaches you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you must make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.

Now let me tell you to the concept called speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject much more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or university …

Now, let me show you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate – the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit for a specific text that you are reading.

Reading is a fantastically stimulating mental activity. It expands your reality and capability. You have so much to gain in discovering the joys of reading. So, go ahead and get down a book right now.

Do You Want To Learn Italian?

December 16th, 2009

Spoken by over 60 million people, Italian is a romance language that hosts a large number of cultural works known worldwide. Considered to be the closest living language to Latin, Italian’s grammar is considerably simpler than its ancestor’s.

You may be interested in learning Italian for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you are going on a vacation to Italy or intend to live there. Maybe you have Italian ancestry or plan on getting a job that involves work with Italians. Whatever the reason may be, learning Italian can be a very rewarding experience.

If you already speak another romance language like Spanish or French, you will find that Italian is very similar. Many linguists estimate that the lexical similarity between Italian and French is 89% while the lexical similarity between Italian and Spanish is 82%. Even if you have only studied Spanish or French in high school, you will find that the grammar is quite similar and easy to pick up.

For English speakers, Italian is often remarked to have a “pleasing” sound to it, most likely due to its great use of vowels and especially its use of vowels at the end of words. Unfortunately, this stress of vowels also means that listening to Italian seems like an incomprehensible stream to most English-speaking Italian language learners just beginning their studies.

Some differences in Italian from English include the fact that there are two genders for nouns: masculine and feminine. It will be necessary to learn which gender a noun is everytime you learn a new noun. You will also find that Italian verbs conjugate quite differently based on the subject.

However, comforting points include the fact that Italian word order is very similar to word order in English. Italian is also a subject-verb-object language like English so English speakers will find it very easy to begin creating new sentences in Italian.

Because so many people are interested in learning Italian, there is a great variety of Italian language learning programs for you to choose from. From audio programs to traditional textbooks, you will never be at a loss for materials to learn from.

Whatever your Italian language goals may be, remember that to succeed in learning any foreign language, you should make a commitment to learning the language everyday and continue to apply effort to your studies for as long as it may take to reach your goals, even years if you are aiming for fluency. But don’t forget to have fun at the same time! Make sure to enjoy Italian by listening to Italian music and watching Italian films. These cultural elements can be the most fun and most rewarding parts of learning Italian.

Avoid Home Schooling Burnout

December 3rd, 2009

It doesn’t matter whether you are teaching in a traditional school or in a home schooling program, there will come a time when you will come across burnout. This is something that you have to prevent so that your learning progress is not affected.

Here are a couple of useful tips that you can use to prevent possible home schooling burnout:

Be aware of your own limitations. From the very outset, you should already be aware of your limitations and those of your child. You must be capable of doing things slowly sometimes, especially if your child is still very young since you have to bear in mind your child’s capacity to absorb. Most students are average learners (obviously), so you will have to give the lessons according to your children’s learning pace. Never expect your small child to read complicated selections nor your teen to get supa-dupa marks in SAT exams.

Try not to adopt rigid schedules, as this can put undue pressure on your child. You should simply set an interesting routine for your child to follow. Children spend most of their time doing routine activities like getting up, eating hearty breakfasts, reading books, practising writing, doing light chores, etc. You must ensure that they finish their routine activities before they can play outside or with the computer. Even these routine activities change from day to day, but you have to make sure that your child follows these routine activities. You can throw in occasional incentives or fun activities if they finish their routine tasks earlier.

You should enjoy home schooling with your child. This is one way you can develop a good relationship with your child and if you and your child can relate to each other, you will find it very easy to handle curriculum struggles and motivation problems later. Aside from motivating and guiding your child, you can also pursue some of your own interests like gardening and cooking. If your child sees you enjoying your own interests, then he or she will also be motivated to do likewise.

As your child is in a home schooling program, you should not try to copy a traditional schools environment. Try to use unusual means when teaching your child. Home schooling is also about flexibility and creativity, and if you can achieve an easy-going but firm atmosphere, you can more than likely prevent burnout.

Just always try to remember that with home schooling, you don’t have to structure your teaching methods in the scholastic way. You can just do things in an enjoyable way especially when teaching very young children, so that they learn naturally. Ensure you keep the day in the right perspective to avoid burnout. Although your children may forget some of the day’s lessons, that’s all right too because somehow children grow in intelligence as well as in physique.

Your children will always think back on your home schooling days together and remember with fondness how well you treated them. The old song goes: “… there’s no place like home” and for little pupils, home is the best place to learn the first lessons of life. If your teenagers are already in high school or college, they can still pursue home schooling if they want to. That would also a good idea since you would get a chance to watch your offsprings’ development.

Parents always look after their children’s best interests, so, if after careful consideration, you still think that home schooling is the best option for your family, then go on with it. Just follow the tips mentioned above to avoid burnout. Have fun activities from time to time to prevent monotony.

How Do You Get Scholarship Grants or Financial Aid?

December 2nd, 2009

Just what is the real cost of a college education and is there a financing scheme available? Well, lets face reality – a college education is really very expensive, causing a lot of parents alarm when their children are looking at going to a community college or a state university.

There are many of items that go to make up the total cost of a college education and the tuition fees are just a rather small part of the big picture of getting into college. Some common expenditures include food, transport, accommodation, pocket money and other miscellaneous costs, which, when added up can be a significant portion when financing a college education.

Nowadays, a lot of families, even those who belong to the upper class, consider applying for financial aid. College grants and scholarships are an excellent method of financial help. Grant and scholarship programs do not require the students or even their families to pay back the monies given.

These scholarships are of two kinds: (1) these scholarships are given according to financial need, and are given depending on the financial inability of the student and their families as a whole to pay for the education, and (2) scholarships based on merit, for example the talent of the student in sports is the main consideration. A students academic ability falls under the merit-based college grant and scholarship system too.

Sometimes, college grants and scholarships combine the merit and need criteria to make the whole financial aid process easier. Numerous students and their families are looking for this kind of financial aid. However, college grants and scholarships are quite limited in number despite the fact that there is an ever increasing number of aspiring students year after year.

Those students who qualify can get federal and a number of state scholarships, some of which are listed below:

Federal or National Pell Grants ” this is a program, which is available nationwide and which is intended to provide financial aid to any qualified undergraduate student pursuing post-secondary schooling. Grants and scholarships of this kind are given to those who have not yet completed a baccalaureate degree.

The worth of the grant varies year after year and will depend largely on the financial needs of the student, the expenses that will be incurred while going to the chosen university or college, and the availability of funds from the national government. This type of grant will open up an opportunity for students to succeed in securing financial aid from the national government.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or FSEOG ” this is a scholarship for continuing undergraduate students who have dire financial needs, but not all students can get this kind of grant. It will depend on the eligibility of the student and the availability of finances at the school concerned.

Another form of financial aid that students and families can get is student loans. However, this sort of financial assistance has to be paid back. The financial needs of the family must be taken into consideration to avoid paying very high interest rates.

It is a must to learn all the terms of the lending agency such as the schedule of repayment and the interest rates, before signing up.

Work study is another form of financial assistance which calls for students to work to sustain themselves during their college stay. Work study is usually carried out on campus and is the most typical form of financial aid in all of the universities and colleges in the USA. Usually, the students will work for schools for ten to fifteen hours per week.

Scholarships, grants and other types of financial assistance to acquire a college education is really multi-faceted, confusing at times, and even down-right exasperating. However, the good thing is that a college education is a non-refundable and non-toxic sort of investment – it is in aid of the student’s future!

Be careful when reading the requirements for that scholarship or grant. Remember, out of the large numbers of scholarship applicants, only a few will suit their requirements. So, read the required qualifications carefully and only go for the scholarships that you are elligable for. If a financial aid for college scholarships or grant does not suit your qualifications, do not bother with it, try looking for another one.

Make sure you fulfill all the necessary requirements. When you make the application form for the financial aid for college scholarships, you definitely must already have to hand all the documents required (eg birth certificate, driving licence, school records or whatever). It is not a good idea for you to wait for your prospective sponsor to ask you for proof of something before you know where it is. Most of all, submit your application for financial aid for college scholarships early, and work on the assumption that you will be considered as one of the sponsor’s scholars.

On Learning Japanese

November 6th, 2009

There are many reason that one might want to learn Japanese. Some people are interested in Japanese because of the cultural phenomenon that many products from Japan have become… from video games to anime.

Japan is also liked by many people because it has a strong traditional culture and a very strong business culture which has promoted Japan to being the second largest economy in the world.

Japanese is a language like any other foreign language in its approach but we also must remember a few things if we want to be successful in learning it.

Japanese is more difficult to learn than a European language because Japanese uses kanji which are characters far different from the letters that make up our alphabet.

Spanish or French, on the other hand, use the same script as English and also share many words because English borrowed a great number of words from these languages and other Latin influences thus resulting in many cognates between the languages. This means that you can pick up a great number of words simply because they are very similar to the English equivalents.

What this means for studying Japanese is not that it is impossible but just a bit more difficult.

You need to have a strong reason for wanting to learn Japanese if you are going to become proficient in it.
